Hamilton comedy fans welcomed a modern-day Renaissance Woman to the stage of the Comedy Playhouse Tuesday night. Silvi Santoso is a mother of three, a food inspector and even an editor for a newsletter, all at the same time. She studied in three different countries with a background in science and in theatre. She’s sings, she dances and she also paints. On top of all that, she’s also an active comedian, travelling around Canada and the United States to deliver her stand-up.
Three years ago, Santoso was dared by a colleague to try her hand at stand-up. She took a chance and signed up for a comedy course at Humber College and eventually found herself on stage to take up that dare. Her first show was a surprising success and it inspired her to take her comedy more seriously. Santoso discovered how much she enjoyed making people laugh. “It’s in my soul,” she says. She still keeps a recording of the laughter she got during her first set on her phone.
“I believe in karma,” says Santoso. “I feel like at work I create a lot of negativity so the comedy balances that out. I feel this comedy makes others feel happier so it makes me feel happier.”
Although she lives in Scarborough, she spends much of her time travelling. As a comedian, she’s been invited to perform in New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. When she’s not travelling out of the country, she’s travelling within it, doing frequent shows in Hamilton, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and places in between. As a result of her busy schedule, she sometimes can’t accept every gig that comes her way.
That doesn’t seem to faze her. “I don’t really have a big ambition,” said Santoso. “I just want my picture on the club.”
Santoso will be back in Hamilton at Yuk Yuk’s on the 29th of April.
