Rookie wins awards in volleyball

It was quite a first year at Mohawk College for Waterdown’s Jessica Heidbuurt and she has the hardware to prove it.

The Mountaineer middle, a graduate of Hamilton District Christian Secondary School, received four honours at the OCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship breakfast in Scarborough Thursday (Feb. 22).

Heidbuurt was named a West Division First Team All-Star. She was also selected to the OCAA All-Rookie Team.  She is the OCAA Women’s Volleyball Rookie of the Year and the West Division Rookie of the Year.

Three Mountaineer teammates are West Division Second Team All-Stars.

They are fifth-year player Danielle Kamps of Vineland Station and Eden High School, who can play both sides as well as middle, Lindsay Vanderweide, a third-year right side from Carlisle and Watertown District High School andsecond-year setter Amanda Kuiper from Woodstock Huron Park.

Mohawk meets Humber in the OCAA Championship quarter finals tonight (Feb. 22) at  8:00 pm, Centennial College.
