Sounds of the people: Interview with William Bolton

As I awaited a slow summer in Hamilton this past May, miles away in Newton, Massachusetts the summer months were about to become much busier for one Boston College student.

William Bolton, one of the newest and brightest names in the music industry has yet to actually set foot in a big label’s studio. However, thanks to the internet and more specifically SoundCloud, he has made a name for himself, started a career and even enjoyed financial success.

SoundCloud is a global online audio distribution platform based in Berlin that enables users to upload, record, promote, and share their originally-created sounds. Bolton took advantage of this by posting a full, self-produced album and began his quest to attract the ears of SoundCloud users everywhere.

Bolton, born and raised in Royal Oaks, Michigan grew to love soul music, jazz, and says his Detroit roots are a big influence, saying, “Motown is my biggest inspiration.”

Bolton first came out with a self-produced solo album titled Summer Breeze (you can download a copy of Summer Breeze here) in the summer of 2015. With songs such as ‘Bud Light’ and ‘Fading’ receiving an overwhelming response, he decided to act quickly, creating a new EP titled Love Supreme this past summer.

Bolton has since moved to Los Angeles to advance his career. However, before graduating from Boston College and setting off on his first tour, Bolton was able to sit down with me and give some of his views on the music industry. It is fair to say his views and thoughts make quite the impression, and Bolton will be a name to watch as his career unfolds.
